FFI volunteers represent Indiana at the Thoroughbred Aftercare Day at Ellis Park
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Indianapolis, IN
On July 17th, Friends of Ferdinand volunteers and Board Members participated in the Thoroughbred Aftercare Day, hosted by Ellis Park. It was a great day meeting the fans and horsemen at Ellis Park and networking with our Kentucky colleagues from Old Friends, Our Mims, KY Equine Humane Center and Makers Mark Secretariat Center. Many horsemen running thoroughbreds in Indiana also run at nearby Ellis Park, so this was a great opportunity for Friends of Ferdinand volunteers to talk with them at a different venue.
In a joint venture with the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, the TAA had goggles signed by riders available for a donation to be split between the TAA and the PDJF. The fifth race was named after Louisville-based Papa John’s Pizza, which presented a check for $24,570 to the TAA, the result of its highly successful online ordering promotion in the spring that netted $1 from every order to the aftercare initiative via TAA promo code from all participating Louisville and Lexington corporate locations.
Horse owners at Ellis Park contribute a per-start donation to the TAA, with the track matching every dollar. “Racehorses are good to us, and we owe it to be good to them once their racing days are over,” said Ellis Park racing secretary Dan Bork. “Ellis Park is proud to join forces with its horsemen to contribute to the TAA.
Friends of Ferdinand is Indiana's only TAA accredited equine welfare organization. We work to place the right horse, in the right home, with the right rider, the first time. "The support that TAA provides to Friends of Ferdinand on behalf of the national racing community is amazing. We are thrilled to be able to support the TAA by participating in the Thoroughbred Aftercare Day at Ellis Park and for the opportunity to represent the good work that we are doing for retired racehorses in Indiana and the Midwest" said Friends of Ferdinand president, Sara Busbice.
